DermaFloat LAL Air Loss Mattress
Product Code: JHI-DFLAL3680NZ
Joerns DermaFloat® LAL Low Air Loss Mattress System — 20 Therapy Cells, CairRail Bolsters, Pulsation Therapy, 500 lb, 36" & 42" Widths
True low air loss. Pulsation therapy. Two mechanisms working together for advanced wound healing. The Joerns DermaFloat® LAL is a combination therapy mattress system that addresses the two primary skin breakdown mechanisms simultaneously — pressure and moisture. True low air loss technology continuously moves air through the mattress surface, wicking moisture away from the patient's skin and eliminating the humid microclimate that accelerates skin breakdown. Twenty individual horizontal therapy cells distribute the patient's weight evenly across three zones, providing consistent pressure redistribution across the full body surface. And optional pulsation therapy adds rhythmic cell inflation/deflation cycles that further reduce sustained pressure at any single contact point. CairRail side air bolsters provide risk management support against resident movement toward the bed edges. A 2" lower safety cell maintains mattress inflation for up to 12 hours during a power outage, preventing the patient from bottoming out on the bed frame. The antibacterial, antifungal, fluid-proof, moisture vapor permeable cover creates the optimal skin environment at every surface contact point. Three control modes (Autofirm, Therapy, Pulsate) with 8 comfort/therapy settings. 500 lb capacity. Available in 36" and 42" widths. Authorized Joerns dealer.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36" | 80" | 10" | DFLAL3680NZ | Standard hospital bed width; patients up to approximately 250–300 lbs |
| 42" | 80" | 10" | DFLAL-4280NZ | Wider beds (CareWide 42" frame); larger patients requiring wider sleep surface |
Note: Select the width that matches your bed frame's sleep surface. The 42" mattress is designed for use on 42" wide bed frames — it will not fit correctly on a standard 35" or 36" frame. Call 1-866-218-0902 if you need help confirming the right size for your bed.

Understanding the Therapy — Why LAL + Pulsation Works
True Low Air Loss — Moisture Management
Pressure injury development is not caused by pressure alone — moisture plays an equally important role. When a patient lies on a standard foam or static air mattress, body heat and perspiration create a warm, humid microclimate at the skin-mattress interface. This moisture softens and weakens the skin, making it far more susceptible to breakdown under sustained pressure. True low air loss mattresses address this by continuously flowing air through the mattress surface at a low volume, removing heat and moisture from the skin contact area and maintaining a drier, cooler skin microclimate. The DermaFloat LAL designation means this is a genuine low air loss system — not an alternating pressure mattress with low air loss marketed loosely, but a system designed primarily around low air loss therapy as the primary treatment mechanism.
20 Horizontal Therapy Cells — Pressure Redistribution
The 20 horizontal therapy cells distribute the patient's weight across the full mattress length, conforming to the body's contours to spread pressure over the largest possible surface area and reduce peak pressure at high-risk bony prominences — sacrum, heels, ischial tuberosities, and occiput. The horizontal cell orientation allows the cells to deform vertically under body weight without creating the lateral shifting or instability that vertical tube designs can produce. Three zones allow different pressure settings across head, body, and leg areas to match the patient's clinical needs at each body region.
Pulsation Therapy — Additional Pressure Relief
In Pulsate mode, the therapy cells cycle through rhythmic inflation and deflation patterns that repeatedly shift the pressure points across the mattress surface — similar in principle to alternating pressure therapy but combined with the continuous moisture management of low air loss. For patients with active pressure injuries or at very high skin breakdown risk, pulsation adds a dynamic therapy layer that cannot be achieved with static surfaces or low air loss alone.
Three Operation Modes
The control unit provides three distinct modes that match therapy intensity to the patient's current needs. Autofirm automatically firms the mattress to a safe transfer surface when the caregiver needs to reposition or transfer the patient — preventing the sinking that can make mattress-based transfers difficult and unsafe. Therapy mode delivers continuous low air loss pressure redistribution for ongoing skin protection. Pulsate mode adds the rhythmic pressure cycling for maximum therapeutic effect in high-risk patients or those with existing wounds. Eight comfort/therapy settings within these modes allow fine-tuning for individual patient comfort and clinical requirements.
CairRail Side Air Bolsters
CairRail bolsters are integrated side air chambers that run along both edges of the mattress. They provide a firm, raised perimeter that reduces the risk of patients rolling toward or off the edge of the mattress — a particular safety concern for confused or agitated patients, or those with limited trunk control. Unlike rigid foam perimeter rails that can create pressure points at the mattress edge, the air bolsters provide a cushioned, responsive boundary that protects the patient without creating new pressure injury risk at the mattress periphery.
12-Hour Safety Cell — Power Outage Protection
A dedicated 2" lower safety cell is permanently inflated and maintains its inflation for up to 12 hours without power — providing a base layer of support that prevents the patient from bottoming out on the bed frame deck in the event of a power failure, pump malfunction, or accidental disconnection. This safety layer is critically important in home care and non-institutional environments where emergency backup power may not be available and where a power interruption could otherwise leave a patient directly resting on the metal or plastic bed frame surface.
Antibacterial, Antifungal, Fluid-Proof Cover
The mattress cover is treated with antibacterial and antifungal agents to inhibit microbial growth at the cover surface — an important infection control feature in care environments where incontinence, wound drainage, or perspiration may contaminate the mattress surface. The fluid-proof construction prevents liquids from penetrating to the therapy cells below, while moisture vapor permeability allows the low air loss airflow to continue wicking moisture vapor through the cover from the patient's skin. The low shear, low friction therapy pad surface reduces the mechanical forces on the skin during repositioning that contribute to pressure injury development.
CPR Quick Deflation
A CPR quick deflation valve allows the mattress to be rapidly deflated to a firm, flat surface in emergency situations requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation — ensuring the caregiver can perform effective chest compressions on a solid surface without delay.
Who This Mattress Is For
