Heavy Duty & Bariatric Lift Chairs
Standard lift chairs are typically rated to 375–400 lbs. Heavy duty and bariatric lift chairs are engineered with reinforced frames, wider seats, and higher-capacity lift mechanisms specifically designed for users who need more — whether that's a higher weight capacity, a wider seat, or both. Every heavy duty chair in this collection is an FDA Class II Medical Device built to handle daily use at elevated weight capacities.
What Makes a Lift Chair Heavy Duty?
Reinforced Steel Frame
Heavy duty lift chairs use heavier gauge steel throughout the lift frame and chair frame — not just a stronger motor on a standard frame. The entire structure is engineered for higher loads, which means more stable operation, longer service life, and a warranty that covers the higher weight range.
Wider Seat Dimensions
A wider capacity chair needs a wider seat. Heavy duty models in this collection offer seat widths from 26" up to 30" — compared to 20"–24" on standard models. Proper seat width is as important as weight capacity — a seat that's too narrow creates pressure points and instability regardless of the weight rating.
Higher Capacity Lift Mechanism
The lift mechanism on a heavy duty chair is rated for the higher weight range from the ground up — not a retrofitted standard mechanism. This ensures smooth, reliable lift assist at the full rated capacity over years of daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I exceed the weight capacity of a lift chair?
Exceeding the rated weight capacity voids the warranty and can cause premature failure of the lift mechanism, frame, or motor. More importantly it creates a safety risk — a chair operating beyond its design load may fail during the lift cycle. Always choose a chair rated at or above your body weight.
How do I know if I need a wide seat vs. just a higher weight capacity?
Weight capacity and seat width are separate considerations. A person can be heavy but have a narrow build and fit in a standard-width seat. Measure your seated hip width — the seat should be 1"–2" wider than your hips on each side. If your hip width exceeds 22"–23", a wide seat model is recommended regardless of weight. Do heavy duty lift chairs look different from standard models?
The XL and XXL sizes are wider and sit slightly lower than standard models, but they use the same upholstery, fabric options, and overall styling. Most visitors would not identify them as "medical equipment" — they look like well-made, comfortable living room recliners.
