The Karman Healthcare S-Ergo Lite Transport Chair is the most ergonomically engineered transport chair in its class. The patented S-shaped 6061 T-6 aircraft-grade aluminum frame curves to match the natural contour of the human spine and pelvis — preventing the sliding and pressure-point discomfort that occurs in flat-seat transport chairs. AEGIS antibacterial cushioning with stain resistance provides hygienic comfort. 14" flat-free rear wheels — the largest of any transport chair in this category — deliver the smoothest outdoor ride available. 3-stage locking companion brakes, folding seat, folding backrest, and built-in storage pouches complete a premium chair at just 18 lbs. Available in 16" and 18" seat widths. 220 lb weight capacity. HCPCS E1038. FSA eligible.

Karman Healthcare S-Ergo Lite Transport Chair — Patented Ergonomic Frame, 14" Wheels, 18 lbs

Transport chairs have historically shared one design flaw: a flat seat that ignores human anatomy. Karman's S-Ergo Lite is built on a fundamentally different premise — that the seat itself should contour to the body, not the other way around. The patented S-shaped frame curves at the seat and back to match the natural S-curve of the human spine, tilting the pelvis into a neutral position and supporting the lumbar region without a separate add-on cushion.

The AEGIS antimicrobial technology built into the cushioning inhibits bacterial and fungal growth on contact surfaces — important for users in clinical settings or those with compromised skin integrity. The 14" polyurethane flat-free rear wheels are the largest found on any transport chair we carry, providing exceptional smoothness over pavement, uneven surfaces, and outdoor terrain. The 3-stage locking brake system offers graduated braking control — something no other transport chair in this catalog provides.

Important: The S-Ergo Lite supports a maximum of 220 lbs. Confirm the user's weight before ordering — users above 220 lbs require a higher-capacity chair.

How to Size the Karman S-Ergo Lite

  1. Confirm Weight Capacity First

The S-Ergo Lite supports a maximum of 220 lbs. This is the most important check before any other sizing consideration. Users above 220 lbs require a different chair — the Strongback Excursion (300 lbs) or Nova transport chairs (300 lbs) are appropriate alternatives with ergonomic features.

  2. Choose Seat Width — 16" or 18"

Measure the user's widest hip point while seated and add 1"–2" for comfort clearance. The S-Ergo Lite's S-shaped seat naturally keeps the user centered, so the fit is less forgiving than a flat seat — a properly fitting width is important for the ergonomic benefit to work. If hip width is up to 14", the 16" seat is a proper fit. If hip width is 15"–16", choose the 18" seat.

  3. Understand the S-Shaped Seat Fit

The S-shaped seat is not flat — it curves at the base to tilt the pelvis and at the back to support the lumbar region. This means the seated experience feels different from a flat-seat chair. Users transitioning from a flat-seat transport chair should have a brief acclimation period. The S-curve actively prevents forward sliding, so users who habitually brace with their feet to stay positioned may initially feel "locked in" — this is the intended ergonomic effect.

  4. Check Doorway and Storage Clearance

The 16" seat model opens to 23" overall; the 18" model opens to 25". Both fold to 12" — identical to many standard transport chairs despite the premium features. The independently folding seat reduces overall bulk further when both are folded. Standard interior doorways (32"–36") accommodate both models comfortably.

  5. Assess Outdoor and Surface Requirements

The 14" flat-free rear wheels provide the smoothest outdoor performance of any transport chair in this catalog. For users pushed regularly on sidewalks, uneven pavement, park paths, or travel environments, the 14" wheels handle these surfaces with noticeably less vibration than 8" or 12" wheel chairs. The polyurethane tread is also gentler on indoor flooring than hard rubber wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the S-shaped frame ergonomic and how is it different from a flat seat?

The patented S-shaped frame curves at two points: the seat base tilts slightly forward to place the pelvis in a neutral anterior tilt, and the backrest curves inward at the lumbar region to support the natural spinal lordosis. In a flat-seat transport chair, the pelvis rotates backward (posterior tilt), flattening the lumbar curve and loading the intervertebral discs asymmetrically. The S-curve corrects this by positioning the skeleton in its neutral alignment — distributing body weight more evenly across the ischial tuberosities (sit bones), reducing tailbone pressure, and keeping the spine in a healthy stacked position.

What is AEGIS antimicrobial technology?

AEGIS is a proprietary antimicrobial treatment applied to textile and cushion surfaces. It works by bonding a silane-based compound to the fiber surface that physically disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria and fungi on contact — without leaching chemicals. The result is a cushion surface that inhibits microbial growth between cleanings, reducing odor, staining, and the risk of surface contamination. This is particularly valuable for users with compromised skin integrity, incontinence, or in clinical environments where hygienic seating is a priority.

What are 3-stage locking brakes and how are they different from standard hand brakes?

Standard companion hand brakes operate in two states: engaged (braking) or released. The Karman 3-stage system adds an intermediate lock position — the brake can be set to light resistance, firm resistance, or fully locked. This allows the caregiver to apply graduated braking pressure for different conditions: light resistance for slight slopes, firm resistance for steeper inclines, and full lock for stationary transfers. No other transport chair in this catalog offers this level of brake control.

Why are 14" rear wheels better than 12" or 8"?

Larger wheels have a larger rolling radius, which means they bridge surface irregularities more smoothly and require less force from the caregiver to maintain forward momentum over rough or uneven terrain. A 14" wheel absorbs bumps that a 12" wheel would transmit to the user, and significantly outperforms 8" wheels outdoors. The polyurethane high-tread tire adds grip and cushioning not found on standard composite solid wheels. The result is the smoothest outdoor ride of any transport chair we carry.

Why do both the seat and backrest fold on this chair?

Most transport chairs fold only the frame (X-brace collapse) with a fixed or fold-down back. The S-Ergo Lite folds both the seat and backrest independently, creating a much flatter and more compact package — particularly useful for vehicle loading, storage in tight closets, or fitting behind an airline seat. This dual-fold design is unique among transport chairs in this price range.

Does this chair come with a seat belt?

A seat belt is available as an optional accessory (Karman SB99) but is not included as standard. If a seat belt is required, order the accessory at the same time as the chair. Anti-tippers for the S-Ergo Lite are also available separately and recommended for users pushed on inclines or ramps.
