Hoyer HML400 Hydraulic Manual Patient Lift — 400 lb, Rotating Pump Handle, Adjustable U-Base, Disassembles for Storage

Hoyer's most popular home care lift. Reliable. No batteries. No charging. The Hoyer HML400 is the most widely used home care patient lift in the Hoyer lineup — a 400 lb manual hydraulic lift that has earned its position as the first-choice home care lift through decades of reliable performance. An ergonomically placed hydraulic pump handle rotates to either side of the lift, allowing the caregiver to operate it from whichever position best suits the transfer. The adjustable U-base opens for wheelchair and furniture access and closes to 24" for doorway navigation. A low base height of 5.5" rolls smoothly under most home beds, and the mast separates from the base without tools for compact storage or transport in a vehicle. Lifting range of 28" to 77" covers floor pick-up through high surface transfers. No batteries, no charging, no electrical components — just reliable hydraulic operation and a simple progressive release valve for controlled patient lowering. Authorized Hoyer dealer.

Key Features

Rotating Pump Handle — Operable From Either Side

The hydraulic pump handle on the HML400 rotates freely to either side of the lift, allowing the caregiver to pump and operate the lift from whichever position the transfer situation requires. In many home care transfer scenarios — particularly around beds, commodes, or tight bathroom spaces — the caregiver needs to be on a specific side of the patient to provide assistance or maintain safety. The rotating handle means the lift's mechanical operation doesn't force the caregiver into a suboptimal position during the lift.

Progressive Release Valve — Controlled Lowering

Patient lowering is controlled by a progressive release valve — the more the valve is opened, the faster the descent, but the valve is restricted so even when fully open the speed remains safe and controlled. Opening the valve just a quarter turn provides a very slow, gentle descent that allows the caregiver to work hands-free while assisting or comforting the patient during lowering. The valve requires only gentle pressure to operate — it should never be forced.

Adjustable U-Base — Toileting & Furniture Access

The U-shaped base adjusts via a hand-operated mechanism and opens to 40.5" for positioning around wheelchairs, chairs, and commodes — and narrows to 25.5" for maneuvering through doorways. The U-shape specifically allows the lift to straddle toilets and commode frames, making toileting transfers straightforward without requiring a specialty commode sling configuration.

Low Base — 5.5" Clearance

A base clearance of 5.5" with standard 4" diameter wheels allows the HML400 to roll under most home care beds and low-profile chair bases — enabling the caregiver to position the lift directly beside the patient's sleeping or sitting surface before beginning the transfer, rather than needing to first reposition the patient away from the furniture.

Disassembles for Storage & Transport

The mast separates from the base without tools, reducing the assembled lift to two compact pieces for storage in a closet or transport in a vehicle. This disassembly capability is particularly valuable for home care situations where the lift needs to travel with the patient — to a care facility visit, a vacation, or between residences — or where storage space is limited.

No Battery. No Charging. No Electrical Components.

The HML400 is a purely hydraulic lift — no battery to charge, no motor to maintain, no electrical failure risk. In home care environments where a caregiver might be performing one or two transfers per day, the simplicity of a hydraulic lift is a genuine practical advantage. There's no risk of a dead battery leaving a patient unable to be lifted or lowered, and maintenance needs are minimal compared to electric models.
