Seat Lifts
A seat lift — also called a lifting cushion or standing aid — is a portable powered cushion that fits into an existing chair, sofa, or toilet seat and gently tilts forward to assist the user to a standing position. Unlike a full lift chair which replaces your existing seating, a seat lift works with furniture you already own. It is a practical, lower-cost solution for users who primarily need standing assistance but are otherwise comfortable in their current chair.
Seat Lift vs. Lift Chair — Which Do You Need?
Choose a Seat Lift If:
- You love your existing chair and only need help standing up
- You need a portable solution — seat lifts can travel and work in multiple locations including dining chairs and toilets
- Budget is a primary concern — seat lifts are significantly less expensive than full lift chairs
- You need a temporary solution for post-surgical recovery
- You want to add lift assist to a favorite sofa or recliner
Choose a Full Lift Chair If:
- You need both standing assistance AND reclining comfort
- You spend significant time seated and need proper support
- You need therapeutic positioning — zero gravity, elevated legs, or heat and massage
- Your existing chair is not providing adequate comfort or support
What to Look For in a Seat Lift
- Weight capacity — confirm the seat lift is rated for the user's weight
- Seat width — should fit the chair it will be used in without overhanging
- Battery vs. corded — battery-powered models offer portability; corded models don't require charging
- Lift angle — most seat lifts tilt to approximately 20–25 degrees, enough to assist standing without feeling like being launched forward
- Remote control — should be easy to operate with limited hand strength
